Peter Cosgrove talks hiring and retaining the right talent at IOD conference

Cpl partnered with the Institute of Directors last night and delivered a talk on how to hire and hold talent to a group of about 70 new members of the IOD at the St Stephens Green Club.

Peter highlighted some of the challenges in hiring and highlighted that while CEOs said that talent was there most important asset, few CEOs could measure talent as a metric and therefore were unable to compensate / bonus senior staff on the success of their hiring or retention.

He highlighted a number of key actions to help when hiring namely:

  • Look at your screening process, e.g. only interviewing those with a degree may mean you miss out on many good candidates for certain types of roles.
  • Take thorough references, this could be the most important way to find out if someone is as good as they seem at interview and in many ways is a much better predictor than interviews.
  • Ensure the team is involved when hiring – as many good hires are not a good fit and you need to find this out in advance.
  • Understand your own brand – the first impressions you create will last a long time with a candidate – so make them positive

He also highlighted the importance of retention of your good staff and the fact that top talent like to work with other top talent – so ensure that you identify under performers quickly as it can affect all your staff if they are not dealt with.
