Scientific Salary Guide 2012 (Non Pharmaceutical)
Biotech:
The recent €200m investment in Ireland by the world leader in biotechnology, Amgen; shows the long term level of commitment that multinationals are prepared to make here. As a result of this and similar investments, demand for workers at all levels has increased in both contracting and permanent roles.
Over the past 12 months, skills gaps and shortages have started to become more visible for mid-level workers and demand for candidates with these skills is increasing along with pay in many instances. Overall the sector is in a very positive position, with investment continuing and optimism growing stronger.
Medical Devices.
Medical Devices, like pharmaceutical is going through a booming period and this is highlighted in the number of companies investing in Ireland. Eight of the world’s ten largest medical device companies are located here (including Abbott, Becton Dickinson, Boston Scientific, Johnson & Johnson, Bayer, Creganna Medical, Medtronic and Stryker).
This continued investment has stimulated the emergence of an indigenous cluster of over 100 innovation-led companies along the entire Medtech value chain - from R&D intensive technologies, to proprietary products, contract design and manufacturing, packaging and sterilisation. This has positioned Ireland as a world-class centre of excellence for medical devices.
The growth areas in medical devices are in the area of research and development and quality assurance and over the last year we have seen a massive skill shortage in this area. Medical device industry is clustered in Galway. The majority of candidates live in the West of Ireland, therefore for any medical device companies not based in the West it is difficult for them to attract candidates. The sector employs over 24,000 people in 160 companies 80 per cent of global stent production is carried out in Ireland.
