Applications Manager - R&D

Role Description

Our client, a growing agri-food company, are currently recruiting for an Applications Manager.

Role Overview:

Reporting to the Research & Development Manager the successful candidate will supervise and coordinate the activities of a team of multi-discipline applications scientists focused on commercialising enzymes and enzyme based processes for the food, animal feed and biofuels markets.

Role Deliverables:

  • Project management of internal research projects and externally funded Horizon 2020 projects
  • Supervising and training a team of 4-6 scientists, including Principal, Senior and associate scientists and work placement students as required
  • Assessing novel technologies relevant to the company ambitions
  • Co-ordinating with Principal Scientists from other teams and senior management to produce effective business solutions and achieve overall company targets
  • Communicating complicated scientific technologies and results in a clear and simple manner
  • Maintaining theoretical and practical knowledge of enzymatic hydrolysis applications/workflows
  • Maintaining scientific and competitive knowledge and market segment overview for support of customers, sales and service. Keep up to date with the scientific community. Train other colleagues on new products/applications as necessary
  • Providing high quality scientific support by customer visits, product/application demonstrations, seminars/workshops and sample analysis
  • Working effectively with Sales and Operations in the provision of any necessary scientific data required for customer presentations or testing

 

Experience and Qualifications

  • PhD in Enzymology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Biotechnology or related discipline.
  • 5+ years industrial research experience
  • 2+ years project management and people management experience
  • Experience in a biotechnology setting, particularly lignocellulosic enzymes
  • Experience in presenting technical materials in written and verbal form is critical

 

Other Significant Role Requirements:

  • Project management qualification such as PMP, PRINCE2 or other
  • Experience in molecular biology, protein expression and engineering and fermentation
  • Experience in techniques related to enzyme characterisation and measuring enzymatic hydrolysis of carbohydrates
  • Experience in participating in Horizon 2020 (and other) funded projects
  • Experience in statistical design of experiments (DOE)
  • Experience of working in a high throughput industrial laboratory setting
